JS Tan was admitted to the Singapore Bar in 1992 and has been involved in litigation and dispute resolution ever since.
He represents clients in SOPA Adjudications, Arbitrations, Court cases and mediations.
In the course of his practice, he worked on several matters which resulted in landmark judgments:
> Spandeck Engineering (S) Pte Ltd v. Defence Science & Technology Agency [2007] 4 SLR (R ) 100; [2007] 1 SLR 720 a case where the Singapore Court of Appeal decided to formulate a new test for tortious duty in Singapore;
> Tiong Seng Contractors (Pte) Ltd v Chuan Lim Construction Pte Ltd [2007] 4 SLR (R ) 364 which was the first reported case on a SOPA Adjudication and where the court determined that final claims fell within the purview of the SOP Act.
> MCST 3322 v Mer Vue Development Pte Ltd & Ors [2016] SGHC 38 a case where the Singapore High Court for the first time clarified the scope of the application of the independent contractor defence in the context of condominium defects claims.
Apart from being legal counsel for parties, JS Tan is also an experienced adjudicator and arbitrator.
He is currently a accredited Senior Adjudicator with the Singapore Mediation Centre. He has heard and adjudicated numerous adjudications as a sole adjudicator and participated in several adjudication reviews as a member of the review panel.
He is available for and accepts appointment as arbitrator in arbitrations. He has received appointments as a sole arbitrator from the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) and is currently listed as panel arbitrator with the SIAC and the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators (SIArb)
